Four ways a garage door fails — and what each one sounds like.
Most calls are one of four failures. Here is what each of them sounds like from inside the house — and which part is actually to blame.
A bang, then the door won't lift
A broken torsion or extension spring, nearly every time. The bang is stored tension letting go, and the door is suddenly two hundred pounds with nothing holding it. That is a broken garage door spring and it is the one repair we'd tell you not to attempt. Frayed or snapped lift cable is the close cousin: you'll see one side drop, the door sits crooked, and the cable hangs loose off the drum.
Grinding, binding, or a shudder halfway up
Worn rollers with seized bearings, or a bent and misaligned track. Grit and cold do this in the valley — the roller stops rolling and starts dragging, and the track takes the damage.
Cracked or dented panel, door won't seal
Panels can be replaced individually when the rest of the door is sound. A door that won't seal at the floor is usually a worn bottom astragal, an uneven slab, or travel limits set wrong — cheap to fix, and it's costing you heat all winter.
Door reverses before it closes, or won't close at all
Misaligned safety sensors, a dirty lens, or force and travel limits that drifted. Sometimes it is genuinely the opener — that's
opener repair and installation — but we check the door's balance first, because a heavy door makes a healthy opener look broken.

How long does a repair take?
Most repairs are one visit, roughly one to two hours including the inspection and the balance and safety tests. Track damage and panel replacement can run longer, and we will say so on the phone rather than surprising you in the driveway.
Can you fix it the same day?
